Track and Field Sets Two School, 13 Personal Records at GMU Open

FAIRFAX, VA — The Frostburg State track and field teams combined for two school and 13 personal records at the George Mason University Collegiate Open Saturday.

On the women's side, senior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster) set a school record in the pole vault for the second straight week, posting a height of 3.05 meters. She turned in a vault of 2.90 meters at the West Virginia University State Farm Games February 8.

Junior All-American Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) established a new school record in the 500-meter run with an impressive time of 1:18.57, easily besting Melissa Hill's former mark of 1:20.02 set in 1981.

Sophomore Mysel Abrokwah (Takoma Park, Md./Blair) continued her season-long improvement, posting a personal-best time of 65.73 in the 400-meter dash, while sophomore Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) also set a personal record in the 500-meter run in 1:24.64.

Freshmen Sarah Valenta (Frostburg, Md./Homeschool) and Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) both turned in career-best races in the 3,000 meters, posting times of 11:28.57 and 11:51.58, respectively. Valenta's mark was a strong 46-second improvement from her previous best showing.

Junior Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was aggressive in the mile run and turned in a personal-best 5:52.40.

Finch, Abrokwah, Ferguson and senior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) teamed for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:16.08, their best time as a foursome.

On the men's side, freshman Kevin Brown (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) got off to a great start in the 60-meter dash en route to a personal-best time of 7.69 seconds, just behind the 7.61 showing by classmate Manny de la Cruz (Waldorf, Md./McDonough).

The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent), junior Travon Morgan (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler), freshman Matt Morgan (Frosburg, Md./Beall) and freshman Andrew Hackett (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) finished second behind UNC-Charlotte with a time of 3:30.88, while the 4x800-meter relay squad of sophomore Ron Lipscomb (Lonaconing, Md./Northern Garrett), sophomore John Densmore (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), sophomore Kevin Ripple (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) and freshman Kevin Allgeier (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) placed third in 8:45.67.

Densmore added a 15th-place finish in the mile run in a personal-best time of 4:40.54, while Lipscomb set a personal standard in the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.36.

Freshman Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata) (9:11.04), sophomore Mike Replogle (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) (9:20.40) and freshman Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) (9:30.68) all established personal-bests in the 3,000-meter run.

In the long jump, junior Travis Bouldin (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) posted a season-best mark of 6.05 meters, while Jonas Horst (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) added a personal-record leap of 5.85 meters. Hackett had a season-best distance of 13.57 meters in the triple jump.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships at Christopher Newport University.
