Track and Field Teams Continue Strong Seasons at Robert Morris, Penn State Meets

FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State men's and women's track and field teams continued their strong seasons in meets at Penn State University and Robert Morris University this past weekend.

On Friday, several Bobcats competed at the Robert Morris Invitational.

Freshmen Kevin Brown (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) and Manny De La Cruz (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) were both solid in the 55-meter dash. Brown posted a season-best 7.07 seconds, while De La Cruz finished in 7.22 seconds.

Sophomore Ron Lipscomb (Lonaconing, Md./Northern Garrett) turned in an impressive time of 2:03.80 in the 800-meter run, while sophomore Terrell Hayes (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) set a personal record in the weight throw with a distance of 12.93 meters.

On the women's side, freshman Laura Knight (Fallston, Md./Bel Air) posted a height of 9'4" in the pole vault, just shy of the ECAC qualifying mark of 9'6.25".

Freshman Heather Lease (Cumberland, Md./Frostburg) ran well in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.87 seconds.

"Overall, it was an excellent meet for us," said Bobcat Head Coach Felix Moreno. "Both teams continue to improve each week."

Other members of the teams took part in the Penn State University National Open at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Junior All-American Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) set a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.73 seconds. She broke the former mark of 58.60 seconds set by Melissa Hill in 1982 and qualified for both the ECAC and NCAA Championships in the event.

Ferguson also tied for seventh in the 60-meter finals in 7.64 seconds and then joined senior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler), sophomore Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) and sophomore Mysel Abrokwah (Takoma Park, Md./Blair) in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet ran a 4:12.92 to qualify for the ECAC Championships.

On the men's side, junior Tyque McCarthy (Bowie, Md./Central) turned in a time of 7.26 seconds in the 60-meter dash and later qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.83 seconds.

Both Brown and De La Cruz improved their times in the 200-meter dash at the Penn State meet, finishing in 24.58 and 25.51 seconds.

Junior Greg Lambert (Columbia, Md./Hammond) was impressive in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:07.64.

"The Penn State meet was tough for both teams, considering its magnitude," said Moreno of the 50-team field featuring some of the top teams on the East Coast. "However, it's the type of competition we need to face in order to rise to the next level. In all, both teams were very competitive."
