Track and Field Women Finish Second at Mason-Dixon Championships

NEW PORT NEWS, Va. — The Frostburg State women’s track and field team placed second and the men’s team finished fourth at the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Championships held Sunday, February 27 at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center.

The Bobcat women scored 89 points to finish as runners-up behind host Christopher Newport, which totaled 179 points. The FSU men tallied 58 points and finished behind champion Christopher Newport (194), runner-up Methodist (106) and third-place Salisbury (71).

Sophomore Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./Robinson) was FSU’s lone champion on the women’s side, capturing the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:31.35. Junior Chelsea Lewis (Hagerstown, Md./Pike (Ind.)) posted second-place finishes in both the 55- and 200-meter dashes with times of 7.46 and 26.89, respectively.

FSU picked up valuable points in the 400-meter dash as sophomore Adrienne Raiford (Capitol Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) finished second (1:02.03), freshman Jess Clingan (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) placed third (1:02.93) and senior Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) took fourth (1:03.80). Clingan was also third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.81), while freshman Christine Woody (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) finished sixth in the 800-meter run (2:36.17).

Freshman Bekah Rauch (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) placed third in the pole vault with a height of 9-0, and freshman Stephanie Potter (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 13-0.

Junior Jenn Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) enjoyed a solid meet, placing third in the weight throw (42-4.25) and fifth in the shot put (34-7.25).

The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Sheila Kurtz (Thurmont, Md./Boonsboro), Finch, Clingan and Raiford finished second in 4:15.02, while the distance medley relay team of Potter, junior Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), freshman Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark) and sophomore Janine Luckett (Mitchellville, Md./Laurel) was also second in 14:14.58.

On the men’s side, senior Brian Bonn (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) was FSU’s top finisher, placing second in the 800-meter run in 1:57.47.

Sophomore Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) was third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:04.43, while senior Travon Morgan (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) and freshman Trevor Albro (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) were fourth and fifth in the 400-meter dash in 52.06 and 52.14, respectively.

In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Curt Ruble (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) was third (16:06.39), junior Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) was fifth (16:22.39) and sophomore Andrew Parker (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) was sixth (16:22.92).

Freshman Adam Jones (Homer City, Pa./United) was third in the shot put (45-10.5) and fourth in the triple jump (40-0.5), freshman Trevor Gibb (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) was fifth in the high jump (5-8) and freshman Ryan Abe (Frostburg, Md./Beall) was sixth in the 800-meter run (2:01.65).

The 4x400-meter relay team of Albro, Morgan, Abe and Bonn finished second in 3:29.64, while the distance medley relay team of sophomore Lee McCloskey (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie), freshman Zach Gaudette (Queenstown, Md./Kent Island), freshman Chris Negley (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and sophomore Thomas Clerkley (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) was third in 11:26.18.
