Volleyball Advances to AMCC Tournament Final With Win Against Penn State Altoona

Frostburg, MD. — Top-seeded and host Frostburg State swept fourth-seed Penn State Altoona, 3-0, to advance to the final of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship Friday night. The Bobcats are playing in their sixth consecutive AMCC Tournament final and will take on Penn State Behrend the #2 seed, who earlier defeated Pitt-Bradford also in a sweep.

Game one was close as the Bobcats (24-9) could not shake the visiting Cougars (13-13). The match was tied at 29-29, before FSU scored three of the last four points, with the last point on a Altoona error to win the first game 32-30.

Frostburg State jumped on Penn State Altoona early in the second game as Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.), who had 39 assists on the night, served the first seven points to open up a big lead and it never looked back in winning game two 30-21. The final game was close until Dani Matousek (AACS/Edgewater, Md.) and Carly McDonald (Northern/Owings, Md.) scored nine of ten points to open up a 22-12 lead and lead the Bobcats to a 30-19 victory and sweep of Penn State Altoona.

Sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) led the way for the Bobcats as she had 14 kills and junior Kelli Bumgarner (Calvert/Chesapeake Beach, Md.) had 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs to lead the team to victory.

In the first game of the night, second-seeded Penn State Behrend swept No. 3 Pitt-Bradford, 3-0, to advance to final of the AMCC Tournament Friday night at Frostburg State. The Lions (16-16) battled the Panthers (11-16) through three close matches, winning 30-26, 30-26 and 30-28.

Pitt-Bradford freshman Missy Wahlberg posted a team-high 17 kills and added six digs and two blocks, while junior Amanda Gressley had nine kills and 14 digs. Senior Ashley Bennett recorded 32 assists.

The final of the AMCC Tournament will be Saturday at Bobcat Arena at 1:00 p.m. Admission to the tournament is free.
