Volleyball Finishes 2-1 on Second Day of Gettysburg Classic

GETTYSBURG, PA — The Frostburg State volleyball team finished 2-1 on the second day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. FSU earned wins over Lycoming and York but dropped the championship game of the gray bracket to Messiah.

The Bobcats (3-7) started the day with a 3-0 victory over Lycoming by the scores of 30-17, 30-26 and 30-20. Senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) paced the offense with 13 kills to go along wth 10 digs and freshman Meg McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) was second on the squad with nine kills.

Junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had a solid match with a season-high 37 assists while adding two service aces and 1.5 blocks.

FSU then earned a spot in the championship with a 3-0 win over York. In game one, Frostburg State downed the Spartans 30-21 and followed that with a 30-17 win in game two. In the third game, York kept it close but the Bobcats prevailed 30-28.

McDonald recorded 14 kills and 19 digs followed by McDeamon with 11 kills. Hernandez posted 31 assists and senior Kristie Butt (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) led the way with 14 digs.

In the championship match, FSU lost game one 30-23 but rebounded to tie the match at 1-1 with a 30-18 victory. The Bobcats however, lost games three and four by the score of 30-27.

McDonald posted her second straight double-double on the afternoon with 15 kills and 16 digs while McDearmon posted 10 kills. For the third straight match, Hernandez posted 30 or more assists with 33 while throwing in five blocks. Freshman Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had a break-out performance with 18 digs and five service aces while Butt had 14 digs.

For the second straight week, Hernandez was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bobcats return to action on Friday, September 16 when they travel to Johns Hopkins for the Maryland Division III State Tournament.
