Volleyball Opens Season with Second-Place Showing at Oneonta Invitational

ONEONTA, NY — Frostburg State advanced to the finals of the Oneonta Holiday Inn Invitational before falling to Nazareth, 3-0, Saturday at Oneonta State University.

In the semi-finals, the Bobcats swept St. Lawrence, 3-0. The first game proved the toughest with FSU taking a 30-27 win. The Red and Black followed with 30-18 and 30-19 victories to advance to the championship match.

Sophomore Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) led the Bobcats with 29 assists, while fellow sophomore Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) and junior Kelli Bumgarner (Calvert/Cheasapeake Beach, Md.) added eight kills apiece to pace the attack.

In the final match against Nazareth, Frostburg State was swept in three straight games, 30-13, 30-11 and 30-22.

Ness paced the attack with 21 assists, while Bumgarner again added eight kills in the title contest.

The Bobcats, who opened their season with 3-0 sweeps of both Potsdam and Mt. St. Vincent Friday night, will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Rowan College for a dual match with Rowan and Gwynedd Mercy.
