Volleyball Wins Hard Fought 3-2 Match Over Mt. Aloysius

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State won a hard fought 3-2 match over Mt. Aloysius in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference volleyball action Tuesday evening at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (8-12, 3-0 AMCC) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two games from the Mounties (11-9, 2-2 AMCC).

In game one, FSU rebounded from a 7-5 deficit, scoring five-straight points for a 10-7 lead. MTA would retake the lead at 16-12 and further extend the score to 23-16.The Bobcats narrowed the gap to 27-22 but the Mounties proved to be too much, going on for a 30-24 win.

MTA carried the momentum from game one into game two, taking early leads of 5-3 and 8-5. The Bobcats rallied to tie the game at 8-8 and eventually took a 13-12 advantage.

The lead changed five more times before Frostburg State took the lead for good at 22-21. MTA closed the gap to 26-24 but Frostburg State went on for a 30-25 victory.

Game three appeared to be in FSU's favor as the Bobcats held the edge for much of the set, including the largest lead at 26-19.

MTA would battle back to trail by just one point at 28-27. MTA continued to fight, taking its first lead of the game at 30-29. Frostburg State would later hold a 34-33 lead, but the Mounties scored the final three points to win, 36-34.

The Mounties jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth game. FSU fought back to tie the contest at 15 but MTA moved ahead for a 22-18 cushion.

FSU would eventually tie the game at 30-30 and overcome a 32-31 deficit to win 34-32 and even the match at two games apiece.

In the fifth and deciding contest, FSU jumped out to a 4-1 advantage. The Bobcats would take leads of 7-2 and 11-4 before going on for a 15-6 victory.

Freshmen Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) each had a double-double. Winterling had 26 kills and 15 digs while Wassell posted 20 kills and 10 digs.

Senior setter Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) added 47 assists and four kills while sophomore libero Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) recorded 17 digs and five service aces.

FSU is back in action tomorrow when it hosts NCAA Division II Pitt-Johnstown at 7:00 pm.
