Volleyball Wins the First Annual Maryland State DIII Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD - Frostburg State University volleyball (12-2) won the first annual Maryland State Division III Tournament as they defeated Salisbury University in the semi-finals and won the championship by defeating John Hopkins both matches lasted only three games each.

In the semi-final match the Bobcats held the advantage in every game winning 30-26, 30-19, 33-31. Salisbury, who was the second seed to come out of Pool A, gave the Bobcats a scare in the third game as they made a quick run to send the game to extra time. However, the Bobcats who were led all weekend by junior Lauren Petrick (North Caroline/Denton, Md.) who had 19 kills and 14 digs against Salisbury to regain control and advance to the finals.

In the finals the Bobcats rolled along finishing a prefect weekend as they defeated Pool A champion John Hopkins 30-22, 30-28, 30-25. Similar to previous matches FSU led the entire way and was never really threatened on their way to the Tournament Championship. On the weekend the Bobcats faced Hood College, Goucher College, McDaniel University, Salisbury University, and John Hopkins University and won by a combined score of 15 games to nothing. As a team they served up 70 aces in five games and recorded an outstanding 142 kills for a kill percentage of .273.

Leading the way individually was Petrick who recorded 54 kills on the weekend. She was assisted by junior Carrie Ness (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) who had 99 assists as she split time with freshman Amanda Hernandez (Arundel/Crofton, Md.) who had 67 assists. Junior Sam Seyfferth (Broadneck/Annapolis, Md.) led the way defensively with 51 digs.

The Bobcats will return to action this Wednesday as they open AMCC play against Penn State Altoona at 6:30 pm. They will then compete in the Salisbury Tournament this coming weekend starting with Catholic University on Friday night at 5:00 pm.
