Western Maryland Regional History Day Recently Held at FSU

Twenty-seven students from four school programs in Garrett and Allegany counties presented nine projects at Western Maryland Regional History Day, held at Frostburg State University's Lewis J. Ort Library on Sat., March 2.

Student participants presented the following projects:

-Senior Individual Performance, Benjamin Peracchio of Southern Garrett High School - "Revolution in the Coal Fields: The Battle of Matewan"

- Senior Individual Exhibit, Clory Jackson of Allegany High School - "Through Their Service: African-Americans at War"

- Junior Group Exhibit, Bethany Barry, Jenney Miltenberger, Jordan Owens, Darryl Paskowski and Jennifer Steckman of Washington Middle School - "Valley Forge: Turning Point of the American Revolution"

- Senior Group Exhibit, Tyler Ashby, Natalie Dominick and Holly Sauder of Southern Garrett High School - "The Magna Carta: A Revolution on Parchment" Five entries in Senior Group Documentary included the following:

- Michael Nelson and Adam Sincell of Southern Garrett High School - "Cathedrals: A Revolution in Architecture"

- Samantha Cavalier, Laura Preston and Kellie Rounds of Southern Garrett High School - "Gandhi: A Lifetime Devoted to Peace"

- Adam Babich, Steven Dowdell, Donovan Martin, Matthew Poland and Joseph Price of Allegany High School - "Through Their Eyes: Reaction to War - The Battle of the Bulge"

- Steven Hall, Candi Mann, Joe Records, Matthew Robertson and Shane Spaulding of FSU's Upward Bound Program - "The C&O Canal Basin: Discovery and Reaction"

- Brittney Craver and Jessie Woods of Southern High School - "Picasso's Revolution in Art"

The teachers mentoring these projects were Jeff Sturtz of Washington Middle School, Brian White of Allegany High School, Dan Whetzel of Upward Bound and Dave Bender and Heather Savage of Southern Garrett High School.

Judging this year's projects were Dr. Shawn Johansen and Dr. Paul Charney of the FSU's Department of History, Al Feldstein of the Maryland Department of Planning, James Rada of the Cumberland Times-News, Mary Jo Price of FSU's Lewis J. Ort Library and René Atkinson of WFWM, FSU's public radio station.

The Allegany County Historical Society and the Garrett County Historical Society will be presenting prizes to the top projects in each county. Each of the projects is eligible for competition at the Maryland History Day on April 27 at the University of Baltimore. The top two projects in each category at the State competition will advance to National History Day at College Park.
