Western Maryland Spoils Opening of FSU's New Softball Complex

FROSTBURG, MD — Western Maryland College spoiled the grand opening of Frostburg State's new softball complex, sweeping the Bobcats, 4-0 and 16-1, Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

The Green Terror (26-6) outdueled the Bobcats in a tight opener behind the pitching of sophomore Samantha Abrams, who allowed four hits and struck out 10.

Western Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior Selena Smart drew a bases-loaded walk. The visitors added another run in the fifth when Smart scored on a wild pitch.

The Green Terror opened a 4-0 advantage with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, and Abrams retired six of the last seven batters she faced.

Frostburg State sophomore Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out seven in the complete-game loss. She is now 4-7 on the season.

Senior Krissy Jackson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and sophomore Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) each had two hits for the Bobcats, who stranded eight baserunners.

The Green Terror gained control of the nightcap from the start, scoring seven runs in both the first and second innings before cruising to the win.

Western Maryland took advantage of four walks and two Bobcat errors in the first frame and opened a 14-1 lead in the second inning behind four hits and another FSU miscue.

The Bobcats (8-13-1) scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first as Zych singled and later scored on a single by sophomore Amber Blackmire (Hebron, Md./Mardela).

Green Terror sophomore Heather Sinclair went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs in the second contest, while Smart was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs.

Sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett) led FSU with two hits in the nightcap.

Sophomore Kim Camponelli scattered five hits and struck out five to earn the complete-game win, while Bobcat sophomore Shannon McQuillan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on four hits and four walks in one inning.

Frostburg State will host a doubleheader against Penn State Behrend on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
