Wheeler Paces Women's Track & Field at W&L Invite

LEXINGTON, VA — Senior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) won one individual event, placed second in two others and led off the winning 4x400-meter relay team as the Frostburg State women's track and field team placed fourth at the Washington & Lee Invitational this past Saturday.

The Bobcats scored 63 points, just one behind Centre College. Susquehanna won the women's team title with 105 points, while Roanoke was second with 98 points.

Wheeler, who was named the Female Athlete of the Meet, won the 200-meter dash in 26.68 seconds and placed second in both the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes in 13.15 and 1:02.41, respectively.

Wheeler later teamed with sophomore Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), sophomore Mysel Abrokwah (Takoma Park, Md./Blair) and freshman Heather Lease (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) to capture the 4x400-meter relay in 4:13.82. The finish was a strong improvement over last year's fourth-place showing in 4:18.96.

Finch added a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:03.93), while Lease was fourth in the 200-meter dash (28.11) and sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.92).

Freshman Sarah Valenta (Frostburg, Md./Homeschool) placed third in the 5,000-meter run in 19:45.42, and junior Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was ninth in the same event in 20:23.63.

Freshman Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was fourth in the 10,000--meter run in 43:23.80, and Abrokwah placed 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:07.29).

FSU placed three runners in the top 10 in the 1,500-meter run. Valenta finished seventh in 5:24.25, junior Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) was eighth in 5:25.25 and Katy Eads finished 10th in 5:26.42

Sophomore Katherine Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 31-9, while twin sister Marisa was ninth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:18.91

Freshman Jennifer Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) placed fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 99-8.

The Bobcats return to action March 28-29 at the adidas/Raleigh Relays to be held at North Carolina State University.
