Women's Basketball Beats Hilbert, 70-49

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Junior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) netted 16 points to lead the Frostburg State women’s basketball team to a 70-49 win over Hilbert Saturday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at the Hafner Recreation Center.

Hilbert (6-15, 5-10) controlled the game early, opening a 6-0 lead just under three minutes into action. Autumn Lee-Jefferies extended the Hawk lead to 9-2 at 15:32.

Frostburg State (16-6, 12-4) scored seven-straight points to tie the game at nine with 12:21 left in the opening half. The Bobcats would use a 15-5 run, capped by a Hargrove jumper, to open a 10-point lead, 24-14, with five minutes to go.

Senior Melanie Herget (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) made a jumper with 24 seconds left to give FSU its largest lead of the half, 37-19. Hilbert’s Deanne Withrow made a free throw to narrow the deficit to 37-20 at halftime.

For the half, the Bobcats shot 14-of-29 (48.3%) from the field, 2-of-8 (25.0%) from three-point land and 7-of-11 (63.6%) in free throws. The Hawks were 7-of-22 (31.8%) from the floor, 0-of-2 for threes and 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the line.

In the second stanza, Hargrove made a free throw to give Frostburg State a 25-point lead, 45-20 with 15:58 left in the game. Hargrove later gave the Bobcats their largest lead of the game, 61-21, at 9:21.

The Hawks slowly narrowed the gap to 69-48, but it wasn’t enough as only 1:16 remained in the game. After the teams exchanged free throws, the game came to an end.

In the second half, FSU was 14-of-34 (41.2%) from the field, 1-of-8 (12.5%) from the beyond the arc and 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. HC shot 9-of-26 (34.6%) from the floor, 1-of-4 on threes nd 10-of-12 from the foul line.

For the game, Frostburg State was 28-of-63 (44.4%) from the field, 3-of-16 from three-point range and 11-of-17 from the free throw line. Hilbert was 16-of-48 (33.3%) from the floor, 1-of-6 on threes and 16-of-21 from the four line.

FSU also took advantage with 17 steals on 28 HC turnovers.

Freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) scored 15 points for the Bobcats while senior Stephanie Watts (Baltimore, Md./North County) led the team with eight rebounds.

Lee-Jefferies led Hilbert with 15 points while Amanda McHale paced the team with 12 boards.

The Bobcats close out their regular season Saturday, February 18 when they host Pitt-Greensburg at 2:00 pm.
