Women's Basketball Edged By Lake Erie in AMCC Opener

PAINESVILLE, OHIO — Sophomore Carletta Harrell scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Lake Erie to a 67-66 win over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Gymnasium.

The Storm improved to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, while the Bobcats dropped their sixth straight to fall to 5-7 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

FSU trailed, 35-30, at halftime but came out firing in the second half, using a 9-2 run to move in front. The Bobcats extended their lead to 48-42 before the Storm rallied to take a 58-54 edge with 5:50 left.

Freshman Kelly True (Warfordsburg, Pa./Southern Fulton) sank a jumper to pull FSU even at 58, and sophomore Tracey Little (LaVale, Md./Allegany) hit a three-pointer at the 2:45 mark to give the visitors a 61-60 advantage.

Lake Erie then knotted the contest at 63 before senior Christina Bleivik (Anchorage, Alaska/Bartlett (Pa.)) drained a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 66-63 lead with 1:12 remaining.

Unfortunately, that would be FSU's last points of the afternoon. Harrell hit another basket to pull the Storm to within one, and junior Phylicia Chiappone's lay-up with 25 seconds left proved to be the game-winner.

The Bobcats had several chances in the closing seconds but could not convert.

Little led FSU with 17 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) added 15 points and 14 rebounds and moved into sixth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,374 points, passing Valerie Broadwater (1,364).

Senior Holly Myers (York, Pa./West York) scored 11 points, and True finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in her first collegiate start.

Jennifer Bartholomew had 17 points and Shey Morris added 12 points and 13 rebounds for Lake Erie.

Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Pitt-Greensburg in another AMCC contest at 6:00 p.m.
