Women's Basketball Falls to La Roche

FROSTBURG, MD - Frostburg State dropped its second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest as it fell at home to La Roche, 78-71 Thursday night. The loss drops the Bobcats into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings.

The Redhawks (3-14, 1-5 AMCC) defeated the Bobcats (11-7, 3-3) for their first AMCC victory of the season. It is also La Roche’s first victory over FSU since January of 2002.

Playing without their leading scorer and rebounder due to illness, junior Tracy Little (Allegany/LaVale, Md.) (19.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game), the Bobcats received career-highs from freshman Tracie George (Winber/Winber, Pa.), with a team-high 23 points, and junior Jamie Cable (Brunswick/Brunswick, Md.), who added 21 points.

The two teams battled through a tight first half that featured nine lead changes. The Bobcats jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the first minute of the game, but the Redhawks responded and held a 43-40 lead at the half.

In the second half, La Roche continued to play strong as it led for a majority of the second half. With just over 17 minutes remaining, La Roche took a one-point lead and never relinquished the advantage as the Redhawks led by as many as nine, 64-55, with six and a half minutes left.

However, the Bobcats used a 7-0 run to pull within two points, 64-62, and trailed by only a basket, 73-71, as late as 1:09 remaining.

However, the Redhawks closed out the game as junior Johnetta Owens made her team’s final four free throw attempts to hold off the Bobcats.

The Redhawks had four players in double-figures led by Owen’s 20 points. Freshmen Kari Whiteman and Beverly Kitchens each added 17 points, and senior Amy Myers contributed 10 points. Kitchens led La Roche with 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Melanie Hegert (Old Mill/Glen Burnie, Md.) was the only other Bobcat to reach double-figures as she contributed a season-high 14 points. Battling down low, sophomore Kelly True (Southern Fulton/Warfordsburg, Pa.) led FSU with 12 rebounds.

The Bobcats will return to action this weekend as they travel to Lake Erie College to battle the Storm on Saturday, Jan. 31st at 2:00 pm.
