Women's Basketball Falls to Lake Erie on the Road

PAINESVILLE, OH — Sophomore guard Melissa Ballentine scored a game-high 17 points and added 16 rebounds, and two other Lake Erie players posted double-doubles to lead the Storm to a 69-64 win over visiting Frostburg State in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Gym.

Lake Erie (2-15, 1-6 AMCC), which snapped an 11-game losing streak, jumped out to an early lead and held off a late Bobcat rally for the win.

The Storm opened a 7-0 lead and extended that advantage to 23-12 with 7:01 left in the first half. The margin grew to 32-18 before Lake Erie settled for a 36-22 halftime edge.

Frostburg State (5-13, 2-5) made things interesting in the second half, but it was too little too late.

Trailing 49-35 with 11:17 to play, the Bobcats exploded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to close to within 49-46.

However, the Storm countered with a 7-0 spurt to build a 56-46 lead with 3:50 to play.

The Bobcats cut the deficit to 65-61 with 36 seconds left, but Lake Erie sealed the win from the free throw line.

Junior Kim Faust (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) led FSU with 14 points and 10 rebounds, posting her fourth straight double-double.

Junior Holly Myers (York, Pa./West York) added 12 points for the Bobcats, who were outrebounded, 60-44, and shot just 21-of-75 (28 percent) from the field. FSU also hit just 14-of-28 from the free throw line.

Elisha Crutcher posted 11 points and 13 rebounds for Lake Erie, while Shey Morris had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Carletta Harrell added 11 points.

Frostburg State will host Villa Julie College on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Bobcats defeated the Mustangs, 69-50, earlier this season.
