Women's Basketball Loses to Rival Penn State Behrend 74-54

ERIE, Pa. – Julia Andrus scored a game-high 26 points to lead Penn State Behrend past the Frostburg State women’s basketball team, 74-54 Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats’ (10-6, 6-4 AMCC) three-game winning streak comes to end while the Lions (14-2, 9-1 AMCC) extend their winning streak to 11.

Senior Krystin Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) led FSU in scoring with 18 points while freshman Tonya Handy (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) posted her seventh double double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) chipped in 12 points and freshman Brittney James (Baltimore, Md./Mildford Mill) grabbed 10 boards.

Brittany Mays was the only other Penn State Behrend player in double figures with 12 points.

Frostburg State out rebounded the hosts 41-34, including a 23-13 advantage on the offensive end, but PSB outshot FSU. For the game, the Lions were 27-of-56 (48.2%) from the field while the Bobcats shot 23-of-66 (34.8%).

The teams battled through seven lead changes and five ties over the first 10 minutes of action. With Frostburg State leading 19-18 at 9:55, PSB pulled away using a 15-4 run ot open a 10-point lead with just 2:28 left in the opening period.

The Bobcats narrowed the gap to six, 33-27 with 1:21 left, but the Lions closed out the half with a 38-29 lead.

Penn State Behrend waisted little time in adding to its lead in the second half. PSB made the first basket of the half to extend its lead back to double digits, 40-29 with 19:49 to play, and then used the next seven minutes to open up a game-high 23 point edge.

The PSB lead would remain around 20 points the rest of the way and the Lions would eventually go on for the 74-54 victory.

Frostburg State returns to action on January 24 when it travels to Pitt-Greensburg at 6:00 pm.
