Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Down La Roche and Clinch First-Round Home Game in AMCC Tourney

PITTSBURGH - Frostburg State used a 14-3 run midway through the second half to blow open a close game en route to an 88-72 win over La Roche Saturday afternoon at the Kerr Center.

With the victory, the Bobcats wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the AMCC Tournament and will host Penn State Altoona in a first-round game Wednesday at 6 pm.

Frostburg State (15-10, 6-6 AMCC) held a 54-43 lead with 16:02 remaining before La Roche stormed back with a 10-1 run.

However, the Bobcats answered the challenge with a 14-3 surge over the next four minutes to open a 69-56 cushion.

Sophomore Kelly True (Wardfordsburg, Pa./Southern Fulton) began the spurt with a jumper and freshman Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) sandwiched baskets around a jumper by freshman Krysten Hargrove (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook).

True later converted a three-point play and junior Jamie Cable (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) capped the outburst with a three-pointer.

La Roche (6-19, 4-8) pulled to within seven, 73-66, on a three-pointer by Johnetta Owens with 7:15 to play, but the Bobcats closed out the game with a 15-6 run.

Junior Tracey Little (La Vale, Md./Allegany) scored a game-high 20 points and added nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks for FSU.

George added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Hargrove finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Cable had 15 points.

JaNet Walston led La Roche with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Beverly Kitchens added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Owens and Amy Myers finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
