Women's Cross Country Kicks Off Season With Runner-Up Finish at Shippensburg Invitational

SHIPPENSBURG, PA — The Frostburg State women’s cross country team opened its 2002 season with a second-place performance at the Shippensburg University Invitational Saturday.

Senior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) paced the Bobcats, placing seventh overall with a time of 17:07 in the 4000-meter race.

Freshman Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) turned in an impressive debut, placing ninth out of 27 runners in 17:10, just three seconds off Olsen’s time.

Third for Frostburg State was fellow freshman Sarah Valenta (Frostburg, Md./Home School), who placed 13th overall in her first collegiate race with a time of 17:51.

Juniors Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/ Central Lee) finished the race in the 14th and 15th slots with times of 18:01 and 18:13, respectively.

Host Shippensburg won the meet with 23 points. Shippensburg alumna Kirsten Harteis paced the field with a first-place time of 16:07. FSU totaled 58 points.

"We performed well, especially considering this was the first meet of the year," said second-year head coach Randy Lowe. "The runners were pretty tired having just finished preseason training, but we should settle in to a normal routine next week."

The running of Kilkus especially encouraged Lowe.

"Carolyn showed a lot of smarts out there in her first collegiate race. She started conservatively and then just picked off runners as she went."

The Bobcats return to action September 14 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa.
