Women's Soccer Blanks Bethany to Give Parker First Career Win

BETHANY, WV — The Frostburg State women’s soccer team used an own goal on a clearing attempt by a Bethany player to defeat the host Bison, 1-0, Thursday afternoon and give head coach Brian Parker his first career victory.

Additionally, junior goalkeeper Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) made five saves to earn her school-record 12th career shutout.

Zych, who surpassed the former mark of 11 set by Jessica Richardson from 1997-2000, also improved her overall record to 23-10-2 and is now just six victories shy of Richardson's all-time school mark of 29.

The Bobcats (1-1-2) got the lone goal of the game in the 28th minute when freshman Shera Rowan (Bishop Walsh/Frostburg, Md.) shot deflected off of Bethany defender Jennifer Buren.

Buren attempted to clear the ball but inadvertently sent it past Bison keeper Maggie Kuhn and into the net.

"We dominated the game throughout," said Parker, whose squad held a 23-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 edge in corners. "We were more aggressive, got the early goal and our defense gave them no real scoring opportunities. We're looking for this first win to send us on our way now."

The Bobcats open defense of their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title when they visit league foe Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
