Women's Soccer Opens Conference Title Defense With 3-0 Win Over Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, PA - Just in time to start conference play is when the FSU women's soccer team (2-1-2) seems to have found its grove from last season. The Bobcats traveled to Penn State Altoona (2-3-1) Saturday afternoon and came away with a dominating 3-0 win. The victory is FSU's second straight and first in conference play.

"Everyone in the conference is gunning for us as defending champions," said head coach Brian Parker. "We approach every conference game very business like in our preparation as we stress consistency."

Consistency is exactly what the Bobcats have shown over their first five games. Besides a 3-2 loss at Westminster, Frostburg State has outscored its opponents 5-1, while junior Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) has posted three shutouts, including two straight.

Against Penn State Altoona, the Bobcats were able to do anything they wanted to with the ball, firing off 29 shots.

The aggressive style of play paid off early as sophomore Erika Neuser (Fallston/Forest Hill, Md.) fed senior Tiffany Parker (Northeast/Pasadena, Md.) to put FSU up 1-0 in the 15th minute.

Frostburg State's continued pressure resulted in two more second-half scores. The first came in the 54th minute as freshman Beth Hlebasko (Linganore/New Market, Md.) scored her second goal of the year on a solo effort.

The final goal of the afternoon came in the 68th minute as freshman Jodie Gittleson (Wooton/Rockville, Md.) scored her second goal of the season unassisted.

Penn State Altoona was only able to get off five total shots, one of which was on net. For Zych it was another easy day in net as the Bobcat defense shut down any run before Altoona could even get in proper position.

Frostburg State opens its home schedule when it hosts Washington & Jefferson Wednesday, September 18th at 4:30 p.m.
