Women's Soccer Shuts Out Penn State Altoona

FROSTBURG, MD - Frostburg State extended its winning streak to five games and remained undefeated in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with a 5-0 win over visiting Penn State Altoona. Freshman Danielle Carter (Rockville/Rockville, Md.), who was named AMCC Player of the Week for her play last week, continued her solid play with two goals this afternoon.

The Bobcats (9-3, 4-0) jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Jodie Gittleson (Wooton/Rockville, Md.) fired a ball from about 30-yards off the fingertips of Altoona’s goalkeeper, Veronique Larin and into the net. Minutes later Carter put Penn State Altoona (3-12, 1-3) down 2-0 as she ran with junior Karen Kotofski (Northeast/Glen Burnie, Md.) down the middle of the field on a breakaway. Kotofski feed the ball by the Lions defense to Carter, who finished off the run easily sliding the ball into the corner of the net.

In the second half, the Bobcats continued their aggressive attack, putting up three more goals. Kotofski started the second half scoring as she found a rebound in the box, made a move to her right and drove the ball into the side netting.

Twenty minutes later, Carter was able to find the net for the second time as sophomore Micaela Karinshak (Loudoun County/Leesburg, Va.) fired a crossing pass through the box, past a diving Larin, and found Carter on the other side who tapped it in for her eighth goal in her past four games.

Junior transfer Beth Yetter (Montgomery College/Silver Spring, Md.) capped the scoring as sophomore Shera Rowan (Bishop Walsh/Frostburg, Md.) assisted making a run through the defense and fired a shot off the goalkeeper’s hands. The ball trickled toward Yetter, who immediately fired the ball into the open net for her second goal of the year.

Defensively the Bobcats stomped out all of the Penn State Altoona’s scoring chances, out shooting the Lions 36-10. Senior Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) made two saves on the afternoon for the shutout win, which is her second of the season and 16th of her career, an FSU record.

Frostburg State will return to action this weekend as it hosts Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, October 25th and then Westminster on Sunday October 26th, both games starting at 1:00 pm.
