Women’s Soccer Shuts Out St. Vincent in Season Opener

LATROBE, PA - Frostburg State University women’s soccer team opened its season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 shut out of St. Vincent University. Led by junior Karen Kotofski’s (Northeast/Glen Burnie, Md.) two goals and another shutout by senior Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.), the Bobcats begin what looks to be an exciting season.

The Bobcats seemed to dominate the entire game out possessing the Lady Bearcats 70% of the time. Midway through the first half the Bobcats finally were able to convert on one of their many scoring opportunities as Kotofski took a shot that was deflected by a Bearcat defender but was able to stay online and beat Lady Bearcat goalie Andrea Taylor.

St. Vincent attempted to make a comeback, but Zych along with junior Laurie Reinholt (Glasgow/Middletown, Del.) and sophomores Teri Galt (Good Counsel/Silver Spring, Md.) and Beth Hlebasko (Linganore/New Market, Md.) were able to shut down the Bearcat attack. Zych made 5 saves as the Bobcats out shot St. Vincent 15-5.

Kotofski ended any thought of a comeback late in the second half with her second tally on the afternoon as she had a one-on-one break away easily slipping the ball past Taylor for the 2-0 victory.

“It is a great way to start the season,” said head coach Brian Parker. “Sophomore Erin Carraghan (Walkersville/Walkersville, Md.) played a fantastic game at midfield, Galt and Reinholt anchored the backline and Zych played very solid and communicated well to earn yet another shutout in her amazing career.”

The Bobcats will next take on Buffalo State as part of the Dickinson College Invitational on September 6th at 2:00 pm.

Frostburg State 1 1 2
St. Vincent 0 0 0
W: Zych (1-0)
G: Kotofski 2 (2)
A: none

Notes: The shutout was Zych’s first of the season and is her 15th of her career most in school history. Kotofski’s two goals bring her career total to 40, eight shy of tying the career mark held by Amy Foote.
