Women's Tennis Takes Third at AMCC Championships

WEXFORD, Pa. — The Frostburg State women’s tennis team captured third place at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, Sunday. The Bobcats recorded runner-up finishes in four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles events.

FSU’s season ends with a 7-9 overall record and a 3-3 conference mark. The seven wins for the Bobcats, marks the most for the team since the 2003 season when Frostburg State finished the year 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the league.

The top rated FSU singles player, junior Heather Potosnak (Easton, Md./Montville Township (NJ)), advanced to the No. 1 singles title match after downing Penn State Altoona’s Pia Capra 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. In the finals, Penn State Behrend’s Allison Mudrey would eventually win the title, downing Potosnak, 6-1, 6-0. For her effort, Potosnak was named an all-conference second team selection.

Junior Sarah Eisel (Frostburg, Md./Beall) earned second-team All-AMCC honors after advancing to the title match of the No. 2 flight. She shutout Chatham’s Kaylee Johns, 6-0, 6-0 in the semi’s before falling to Brianna Alianiello of Penn State Altoona in a hard fought match, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.

In No. 3 singles, junior Jenn Tolbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) earned second-team all-conference honors defeating PSA’s Lauren Pannebaker 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in the opening round. In the finals, Tolbert lost to PSB’s Christy Calvert 6-1, 6-2.

In the fourth runner-up finish in singles action, freshman Caroline Shedd (Middletown, Md./Middletown) easily got past PSA’s Liz Cleary in the opening round of No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1 but fell to PSB’s Karen Hobaugh 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the finals. Shedd was the fourth Bobcat to be named to the all-conference second team.

Both juniors Amy Brenneman (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) and Kim Hardy (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's) lost in the opening round of No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Frostburg State’s top rated doubles team of Potosnak and Shedd captured second place in No. 1 doubles. The duo downed Capra and Allianiello of Penn State Altoona, 9-8 in the first round but lost to the team of Mudrey and Calvert from PSA in the finals, 8-5.

In No. 3 doubles, Brenneman and sophomore Alex Buchanan (Stockton, Md./Pocomoke) captured second place, downing PSB’s Jen Balsiger and Amy Brem, 8-6 before losing to Katie DiBartolo and Jenna Francisco of Penn State Altoona, 8-1.

Tolbert and Eisel fell in the first round of No. 2 doubles to PSA’s Amanda Rodi and Pannebaker, 8-4.

Penn State Behrend won the overall title capturing three of the six singles title and one of the three doubles flights for 11 points. Penn State Altoona was second, winning three singles events and two doubles matches for 10 points.
