Women's Track & Field Takes Third at Mason-Dixon Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Junior Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) turned in a victory in the 100-meter dash as well as three other top-three finishes to help the Frostburg State women's track and field team place third out of six teams at the Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championships last Saturday at Christopher Newport University.

The Bobcat women scored 93 points to finish just behind Salisbury, which took second with 101 points. CNU captured the women's title with 285 points.

Ferguson captured the 100 in 12.34 seconds and finished second in the 200-meter dash in 58.27 seconds. She was also a member of the runner-up 4x400-meter relay (4:05.25) and the third-place 4x100-meter relay (49.75) teams.

Junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) was also solid for the Bobcats with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash (59.91) and a fourth-place showing in the 200-meter dash (25.87). Wheeler was also a member of both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams.

Freshman Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) posted a pair of individual top-five showings, placing fourth in the 800-meter dash (2:29.02) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:02.33). She was also on both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay squads.

Freshman Mysel Abrokwa (Takoma Park, Md./Blair) was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.96) and eighth in the 400-meter dash (1:05.24), and she joined Ferguson, Wheeler and Finch on both relay teams.

Sophomore Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) turned in a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (personal-best 5:17.45) and added a sixth-place showing in the 800-meter dash (2:35.32).

Sophomore Katherine Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) was second in the triple jump (31-10), fourth in the long jump (14-2) and sixth in 400-meter hurdles (1:17.17).

Twin sister Marisa finished seventh in 400-meter hurdles (personal-best 1:17.87) and eighth in 100-meter hurdles (18.78).

In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) placed third (21:12.71) and sophomore Julie Hoffman (Parkton, Md./Parkton) was fourth (21:29.47).

Junior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) third in 10,000-meter run (43:12.20).

Sophomore Trista Smith (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) enjoyed a strong meet, placing third in the hammer throw (110-7), fifth in the discus (96-11) and seventh in the shot put (28-1.5).

Freshman Michelle Lange (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (12-6).

"The women's team was very strong across the board," said first-year head coach Felix Moreno. "The women are working very hard and making enormous improvement."
