Women's Track and Field Captures First Annual FSU Classic

FROSTBURG, MD — Freshman Jennifer Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) won three events and placed second in another to lead Frostburg State to the team title in the First Annual Frostburg State Track & Field Classic Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats scored 234 points to easily outdistance Howard Community College (95) and Hagerstown Community College (72).

Waskiewicz captured the shot put, discus and hammer throw before posting a runner-up finish in the javelin to earn Female Athlete of the Meet honors.

She threw the shot 33-5.74, the discus 87-4 and the hammer 99-5. She added a mark of 74-8 in the javelin.

Junior Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.75, while freshman Heather Lease (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) finished second in 13.64.

Lease also turned in a runner-up showing in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.90. Sophomore Mysel Abrokwah (Takoma Park, Md./Blair) and freshman Tredia Howell (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) were second and third, respectively. Abrokwah posted a 29.15, while Howell finished in 29.98.

The Bobcats swept the top four spots in the 400-meter dash. Ferguson won the event in 1:01.87, senior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) was second in 1:03.92, Abrokwah placed third in 1:07.99 and sophomore Marisa Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) finished fourth in 1:14.12.

Sophomore Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) turned in a second-place showing in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:33.73, while junior Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) won the 3,000-meter run in 11:53.22 and added a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run in 5:26.75.

Freshman Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) captured the 5,000-meter run in a time of 20:23.41, while junior Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) finished second in 21:04.58.

Scruggs placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:22.36 and was also third in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.15.

Howell took home the high-jump title with a mark of 4-7.75, while sophomore Michelle Lange (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) was second at 4-6.

Senior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster) won the pole vault with a height of 9-6.25, with freshman Laura Knight (Fallston, Md./Bel Air) adding a runner-up finish at 9-0.25.

The Bobcats then took three of the top five places in the long jump. Reese was third at 13-9.75, Howell placed fourth at 13-5.5 and Lange was fifth at 12-11.5.

Freshman Ashley Amezcua (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) enjoyed a solid meet, capturing the javelin (78-6) and placing second in the shot put (27-6.75), discus (86-4) and hammer (87-4).

"It was nice to have a home meet and at the same time win the First Annual FSU Classic," said Bobcat head coach Felix Moreno. "The athletes had a great time, and I anticipate this meet will get bigger in the years to come."
