“Writing and Art—Art and Writing” Workshop to be Held at FSU

Frostburg State University’s Department of English, the Center for Creative Writing and the Allegany Arts Council will present “Writing and Art—Art and Writing,” workshops on the relationship between the visual and written arts, on Saturday, March 4, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The workshops will be held in FSU’s Lane University Center and participants should meet at the Appalachian Station before workshops begin.

Mary Ann Samyn, teacher in the MFA Creative Writing program at West Virginia University, will offer “Art and Creative Writing,” a workshop for writers concentrating on incorporating visual art into written work. Participants are encouraged to bring in artwork that inspires them in some way.

“Writing an Artist’s Statement” will be lead by Alessandra Lynch, professor of creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh, geared toward helping artists develop a statement that best describes the aesthetics of a piece.

Gerry LaFemina, director of the Center for Creative Writing at Frostburg State University, will present “Writing Art Reviews,” a workshop intended for those thinking critically about art which will discuss working within the concepts of medium, aesthetic and personal taste.

Cost to attend is $50 and payment is due in full at time of registration. Interested parties can apply for Hadra Scholarships through the Allegany Arts Council, 301-777-ARTS. FSU students are eligible for a $25 scholarship. For further information, contact Gerry Lafemina at 301-687-4024.
