Beall Collection

James Glenn Beall (J. Glenn Beall, Senior)

J. Glenn Beall Sr. 1894-1971

Member of the Allegany County Road Commission 1923-1930; member, Maryland State Senate 1930-1934; member and chairman of the Maryland State Road Commission 1938-1939; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth and four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1943-January 3, 1953); was not a candidate for reelection in 1952; elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 1952, reelected in 1958 and served until January 1965.

Senator Beall’s official papers were destroyed when he left office, however, many of his personal papers are housed in the collection

Beall JuniorElected to Maryland House of Delegates in 1962 and reelected in 1966; minority floor leader 1963-1968; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-first Congress (January 3, 1969-January 3, 1971); was not a candidate for reelection; was elected in 1970 as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1971, to January 3, 1977; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1976; unsuccessful candidate in 1978 for Governor of Maryland.

Senator Beall’s official papers were deposited at Frostburg State University in 1976. His private papers and memorabilia started arriving at the University in 2001.
