Obituary Requests

The Lewis J. Ort Library provides an obituary request service from our collection of local newspapers for a fee. If the obituary is located, the Library will provide either a print photocopy or a digital scan of the page containing the obituary. There is a $15.00 charge for each individual request. Requests must include the name, death date (month, day, and year), and the title of the newspaper to check.

The appropriate newspaper will be checked for five (5) days after the death date listed on the request. The request fee must be paid in advance and will not be refunded if an obituary is not found. Once payment is received, your request will be handled within 10 business days.

Obituary requests are handled by the Special Collections Librarian. Requests may be made using the Obituary Request Form (PDF). This form in available online here and can be emailed to libref@frostburg.edu or printed and mailed to the following address:

Please make your check or money order payable to Frostburg State University and include it with your printed form if being mailed. If your request is sent in via email, the Special Collections Librarian will contact you regarding payment. We do not accept credit cards, foreign checks, or foreign money orders.

There is no charge to conduct your own research on-site. We welcome and encourage you to visit the Library. Library staff members are available to assist you with your research and are happy to show you how to use all available resources and equipment. If you are unable to visit the Library in person, your local public library’s Interlibrary Loan Office may be able to assist you in requesting obituaries, and depending on their policies, there may not be a fee.
