Take a Sneak Peek at the new Library web site

Interlibrary Loan

Floor 3, Room 314

  • Obtain materials the Ort Library does not own

There are 2 ways you can request an interlibrary loan (ILL):

  • Submit an automated online loan request through the "find it" feature of OneSearch and Research Port
  • Access, fill in, and submit the online ILL form: Enter your 14-digit library barcode number as username, and your last name as password.
  • ILL services are for FSU students, faculty and staff only.

USM Book Requests :

Book requests are similar to interlibrary loans, but are only made within the University System of Maryland. If you search OneSearch or catalogUSMAI and a book title appears that is only available at another campus, select the "request" icon and follow directions. Allow 5-7 days.

Interlibrary Loan Instructions, Restrictions, and Details :

The Interlibrary Loan Office (ILL) exists to provide students, faculty and staff with materials that the Ort Library does not own. ILL can obtain many materials, including books, periodical articles, dissertations, microforms, government documents, technical reports, films, and more.

Some materials that ILL cannot obtain are entire issues of journals, reference materials, old (published prior to 1800) or rare books, software, DVDs and other forms of multimedia.

To request materials, place an electronic request from OneSearch or Research Port. Be sure to check University of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions' online catalog (catalog USMAI) before submitting your request.

For a book, use OneSearch or catalogUSMAI to see if the item is held at a University System of Maryland Library (USM) and therefore available through the Hold Request function.

For a periodical article, first check FSU holdings for the journal title to ascertain whether the specific volume is held in the Ort Library. Also consult the relevant full text databases that FSU subscribes to through A-Z Databases or Research Port to see if a copy of the article is available electronically. ILL staff will return your request if they determine that you can obtain the material from within the Ort Library yourself.

Articles are usually received electronically within 24 hours. Physical materials such as print books, are usually received within two weeks. Materials are usually supplied free of charge. However, when submitting an ILL request, you may be asked to specify the maximum cost you are willing to pay per request in case there is a fee charged by the supplying library.

You will be notified via an automated email when your requested materials are available for you to access. If we do not have an email address on file for you, or if an email is returned to us and marked as undeliverable, we will attempt to notify you by telephone. Physical materials may be picked up at the Circulation Desk at any time during our open hours. Links to electronically received articles will be made available in your ILLiad account, or in some cases, may be sent to you by email.

You may submit as many requests as necessary for your research needs. However, ILL Guidelines for a borrowing institution (FSU) state that a library MAY NOT request copies of more than 5 articles from the same journal title published within the most recent 5 years. The user will be notified if an article cannot be supplied due to this restriction, and possible alternate methods for obtaining the item will be provided.

For more information about these services or about the status of specific interlibrary loan requests, contact the ILL office.
