Cooper and BirnieDr. Rebecca Birnie, an associate professor in the Department of Music at Frostburg State University, has been honored with the Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award at the 2017-2018 FSU Leadership Awards Reception.

The award recognizes a faculty or staff advisor at FSU who helps students overcome obstacles, grow as individuals and learn how to triumph as a team.

Birnie is the advisor for the National Association of Music Education (NAfME) organization at FSU. NAfME was nearly dormant before she took on the role of advisor in 2013. Now, there are more than 50 members, and NAfME is represented at state and national conferences. She has promoted this growth by constantly pushing students to pursue professional development opportunities and modeling this behavior herself. As an advisor, Birnie assisted students in applying for and receiving a $1,350 grant that covered the cost of registration fees for 10 students to attend the NAfME National Conference. Her students have said that she goes out of her way to motivate and support them, preparing them to take on the post-grad world through their current on-campus endeavors.
