From the President’s Desk: My Homecoming Top Five

Homecoming — a celebration of all that is Frostburg State — and one of my favorite times of the year. For me, it’s a weekend of meeting students, alumni and friends of FSU and hearing many great stories. Here are my five favorite Homecoming experiences:

  • Attending the Golden Anniversary Class cocktail party where I try to pry a story or two from alumni that I can use in my opening remarks at dinner, such as the story of the fireworks prank on the Upper Quad when a cigarette was used as a delayed timer. Or the unfortunate incident when then-Dean Alice Manicur had a bucket of water inadvertently dumped on her from an upper-level dorm window. In the latter case, it appears that the “culprits” were never identified, since that year’s class was able to graduate.
  • Joining Student Government Association alumni when they meet with current SGA officers. It is great to see them discuss many of the same issues and the alumni offering perspective and solutions for the current officers.
  • Meeting alumni in the bookstore who are buying some Bobcat swag. Inevitably, an alum will show me his ID from the early ’70s and asking if it will get him into the game as a student! (If you see me at Homecoming, ask me, and I’ll tell you if he was successful or not.)
  • Going to the Jim Anderson baseball alumni breakfast where our current baseball student-athletes meet and hear stories from our former baseball players and their wives. There are always baseball tips and stories, but, most importantly, advice for the students on how to succeed once they graduate.
  • Walking through the tailgate area before the football game is my opportunity to meet groups of alumni as they share stories and reminisce about their time here at FSU. Everyone is always welcoming – and the food is great!

Here’s hoping you have your own top five Homecoming activities – here’s the full list of events. I encourage you to explore the campus, check out the new residence hall that is under construction, cheer the Bobcats in our first NCAA-DII Homecoming game, and visit with your classmates and former teachers.

Go Bobcats!
