From the President’s Desk: Welcoming Our Newest Alumni

Jun 30, 2021 12:00 PM

Greetings, Bobcats!

We have welcomed a new group of alumni to our Bobcat family, another group that had to contend with all the disruptions of the pandemic, along with the usual stresses of final projects and exams. Like the two groups before them, I am proud of how they rose to the challenge.

We were able to offer these graduates a Grad Walk. As part of the livestreamed event, they were able to walk across the stage in Bobcat Arena with two family members (a first!), hear their names and have several photo opportunities. While the event was less formal than our usual commencement ceremony, I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with each graduate and their family members. We received many positive comments about the event. We still intend to hold an in-person commencement in the future for those who wish to be part of a formal ceremony.

Our commencement speakers shared their addresses during our virtual Grad Week celebration.

College of Business speaker Julia Hershman, a business administration and economics major, encouraged her fellow graduates to lead from where they are.

College of Education speaker Shawn Winans, a health and physical education major and a veteran serving in the U.S. Marines, emphasized the need for one to invest in oneself.

And Jordan Beachy, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences speaker and an English and Spanish major, asks his listeners to consider what meaning they will discover, something that really matters now that real life is here to stay.

This site also offers a welcome from your fellow alumni to this new group of grads, the FSU Chamber Singers performing the “Star-Spangled Banner,” personalized slides from our graduates and a message from me.

These grads may have had a different experience because of the pandemic, but they have proven themselves to be Bobcats through and through. Let’s welcome them to the Bobcat alumni family!
