M20, the Trifid Nebula, one of the major deep sky objects in the constellation Sagittarius. It was probably first observed by LeGentil in 1747. The name comes from the appearance of the nebula as three distinct regions separated by a dark 3-forked rift. M20 lies approximately 1500 light years further than M8, at a distance of 6650 light years.
