Sloop Institute

What is the Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership?

The Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership is a day-long conference held at Frostburg State University in the beginning of March each year. 40 student leaders at Frostburg State University, at the sophomore or junior level, will be chosen through application process to participate in this amazing experience.

The Institute is a full day of workshops with distinguished alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators, followed by an elegant dinner and networking. The entire workshop is business attire as students will be making connections and building positive professional relationships.

The Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership is an advanced experience designed to complement the training and development of our student leaders.  Focus within this workshop is designed around Frostburg State University's Leadership Competency Model.  Participants will develop more skills in communicating intentionally, building and maintaining relationships, developing and empowering others, understanding and facilitating group processes, and developing and carrying out solutions. Alumni from Frostburg State University are asked to come back as presenters for these different areas of our Leadership Competency Model. Students are able to share their personal leadership experiences through a wide variety of individual and small group activities.  Through this Institute, student and alumni are given the opportunity to connect and develop meaningful relationships.

We encourage individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels to apply to attend the Sloop Institute as Frostburg State University strongly believes that each student has the ability to develop their skills and grow into an effective student leader.  This is a unique opportunity to learn more about making a difference at Frostburg State University and beyond.  We sincerely trust that when students complete this Institute, they engage campus with the confidence to be better leaders in their classes and organizations, as well as in their personal and professional relationships.
