Saying Their Names
Students – in a desire to join their voices with those across the country protesting the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and too many other African Americans during encounters with police – held a peaceful but deeply felt Black Lives Matter vigil and candlelit walk in early September. Gathered at the Delaney Plaza clock tower, they shared stories and poetry from students, faculty and staff members, telling their own experiences of living as a person of color in today's America, then reading the names of scores of victims of violence against African Americans. The group, numbering in the hundreds, then walked to the Upper Quad to gather and share more reflections at the newly dedicated Brownsville-Park Avenue Monument, which honors the African American community that was displaced by the growth of the college that became Frostburg State University.
