New Foundation Board Members

Dr. Shavonne Shorter '07

Dr. Shavonne Renee Shorter '07 serves as Associate Provost for Community Relations and Compliance and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Digital Studies at the University of Mary Washington (UMW).

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Frostburg State University, where she majored in Communication Studies and minored in Spanish and Leadership Studies. She went on to obtain her Master of Arts Degree and Doctorate from Purdue University in the area of Organizational Communication. After Purdue, she worked at Bloomsburg University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies. She has been published in a variety of outlets.

In her current role she serves to ensure that UMW is a place where community values are embraced and upheld; where we esteem everyone as a respected, valued and integral part of our campus community; and actively provide members of the UMW campus community with resources for academic, professional and personal success. She directs the Dorsey Scholars Community Service Scholarship program, administers the Perspectives program by the Constructive Dialogue Institute that focuses on the importance of teamwork and collaboration across differences, and is the Administrative Liaison for the annual ASPIRE Week celebration of community values. Most importantly, she enjoys supporting the Community Relations team and helping every member of the UMW community pursue their dreams.  

She is the President of the Big Brothers Big Sisters board of Greater Fredericksburg and is an instructor in her place of worship, Strong Tower Church. She is married to her wonderful husband Gaston, and they reside in Central Virginia.

Maureen Lavan

Maureen Lavan is a seasoned professional whose career reflects a unique blend of expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), data analytics, institutional research and community leadership

After studying accounting at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, Maureen discovered a passion for computing and GIS, leading to more than two decades of service in local government and public utilities. She served as GIS manager for the County of Chester, Pennsylvania, and later for the Greenville Utilities Commission in North Carolina, where she gained extensive experience in technology management, data systems and public-sector operations. 

After several years dedicated to raising her family, Maureen reentered the workforce and applied her analytical and organizational strengths in higher education. She served as accreditation coordinator for the Education Department at Univerisity of New Haven before joining Clarion University as a financial analyst and later director of institutional research. After relocating to Frostburg, Maryland, Maureen embraced a new creative endeavor as a winemaker at a local winery. 

A lifelong volunteer and civic leader, Maureen has consistently devoted her time and expertise to strengthening the communities in which she has lived. Her leadership experience includes serving as chair of the North Carolina Geospatial Information and Technology Association; board member for the American Red Cross Pitt County Chapter; member and chair of the Historic Preservation Commission in Washington, North Carolina; and board member and vice chair of the Clarion Area School District. 

More recently, Maureen has continued her commitment to education and community engagement through service on the University of Maryland Extension Advisory Committee for Allegany County and at Bishop Walsh School as a robotics coach and supporter of the school's makerspace, theatre program and student-run agribusiness. She is a member of the Frostburg Home and Garden Club, a Smithsonian digital volunteer and regularly volunteers on the campus of Frostburg State University. 

Maureen married her husband, the late Dr. Ronald Nowaczyk who served as president of Frostburg State University from 2016 to 2025, after the two met while volunteering with the American Red Cross in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. They have a son, Jake, who is studying architecture and civil engineering at The Catholic University of America. 

Gregory T. Heflin

Greg Heflin is a real estate industry veteran with forty years of experience in all facets of asset/land acquisition, land development and construction that produced over one billion dollars of wide ranging asset types being placed into service during the tenure of his career. 

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in landscape architecture from West Virginia University in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in water resources and environmental engineering from Villanova University in 1997. 

Greg is currently the Vice President of Real Estate and Development for Park Silver Development, a hospitality company based in Fulton, Maryland. His responsibilities include identifying new locations and entitling them for a growing portfolio of extended stay hotels in the Southeast, New England and the Pacific Northwest. Greg is also a part owner of a collection of commercial buildings in Center City and suburban Philadelphia consisting of mixed use development that include residential apartments, co-working office space, retail spaces and restaurants. Earlier in his career, he managed development projects for Choice Hotels International and Marriott International as part of their corporate roll out of the MainStay Suites, TownePlace Suites and SpringHill Suites branded hotels spanning thirty states. Greg has also served as a consulting engineer for nationally branded restaurant chains, prominent educational institutions and large scale regional developments. 

Greg was married to Kelly Dressler Heflin '89, who lost her courageous battle with cancer in 2011. Kelly was a graduate of FSU, Class of 1989. A foundation was created in her honor to raise money to make a direct and immediate impact on the lives of cancer patients by providing financial aid for their everyday expenses. The Kelly Dressler Heflin Foundation Scholarship at FSU, Kelly's beloved alma mater, was created shortly thereafter by the foundation to provide similar aid to FSU students directly affected by cancer. The scholarship is now an endowment. 

Greg currently resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania with his fiancee, Vanessa. In his time away from work, Greg has completed fourteen half marathons, works out at OrangeTheory, plays golf at his country club and enjoys traveling with Vanessa. 

Edward Herold, Jr. '83

Edward Herold, Jr. '83, Baltimore born and current resident of Annapolis, Md., runs a financial services business that has been in business for over 35 years. The focus of the firm is small business owners and individuals providing a variety of tax, accounting and planning services. Herold is a member of the AICPA, MACPA and the Tax Division of the AICPA, with numerous certifications. A graduate of FSU, Class of 1983, he earned his CPA license in 1984 and an M.S. in taxation from the University of Baltimore, Class of 1993. In the summer of 2025, he was recognized as an SBA Accounting Advocate award winner, and in the Fall of 2025, he was recognized as a Legacy Member of the MACPA for his 40 plus years of work in public accounting combined with his community involvement. 

Ed's community involvement includes a variety of non-profits, including the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, The Bernie House, Mission 14, the Alzheimer's Association and FSU. With the Alzheimer's Association, Ed served on the planning committee for the annual Annapolis Walk for several years including two years as planning committee chairman. Ed served on the FSU Alumni Board of Directors for 6 years. As a board member, Ed served on the Student Outreach Committee with three of those years as committee co-chair. The Student Outreach Committee was able to reestablish a mentoring program with the School of Business in 2021, as well as the two-day Speaker Summit in November 2023. Ed has established two scholarships at FSU-one in honor of his parents and the second in memory of Brooke Kirchner, a beloved member of the FSU Alumni Office. 

Ed's work with Mission 14 afforded him the opportunity to participate in a fundraiser that resulted in him summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Currently, Ed is training for the 24 Hours of Booty, a 24-hour bike ride to raise money for cancer research as part of the 24 Foundation. Ed is hoping to follow that up with a marathon sometime in the fall.

As mentioned, Ed currently resides in Annapolis with his partner of almost ten years, Caroline, and their current fur-ever companion, Sweeney, a two and a half year-od blue tick coonhound. 

Keith Price '82

Keith Price '82 is senior tax manager with The Hutt Company, LLC, in Columbia, Md. Additionally, he operates his own tax practice, KDP Tax Services, servicing nearly 200 clients since 1984. Prior to joining The Hutt Co. in 1999, Keith worked as the Internal Auditor and Assistant Controller with the Columbia Association from 1989 to 1999. 

Keith served on the FSU Alumni Association Board for nine years. 

He married his childhood sweetheart in 1983, and they have two grown children who live and work in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Keith enjoys visiting museums around the country and researching ancestry family history. 

Nicholas Trey '24/M'25

Nick Trey '24/M'25 received his bachelors in accounting and an MBA at FSU. Nick is a purpose-driven professional focused on bridging the gap between business success and community impact. His primary focus today is
leveraging his background in accounting and business administration to help support a family business called Classic Remodeling where he serves as the Director of Marketing and Sales.

Nick’s commitment to leadership began during his time at FSU, where he served as a student-athlete and co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). His academic excellence and leadership potential were recognized through the PNC Presidential Merit Scholarship and his induction into the President’s Leadership Circle.

During his graduate degree, Nick balanced a rigorous academic schedule with his role as a Graduate Resident Director within FSU’s Residence Life Office, the treasurer for the Graduate Student Association and many other committees that assisted in FSU’s success.

These roles allowed him to manage organizational finances and mentor fellow students. A native of Westminster, Md., Nick is an advocate for lifelong learning and personal growth. He is particularly passionate about "giving back," a perspective sharpened by his studies within corporate social responsibility. When he isn't analyzing business trends, Nick enjoys reading self-help literature to strengthen his professional "why" and spending quality time with friends and family.
