FEATURED STORY
Fandom Society is a "Catch All" Pop-Culture Outlet
By Megan Knox '24

FSU Fandom Society members take in a movie at the local mall.
In the Gira Center for Communications and Information Technology, room 156, students who share a love for various forms of pop culture congregate every Wednesday night. They discuss their interests -- whether they’re movies/tv, anime/manga, comics, video games, cosplay/fursuiting or beyond. It’s a Fandom Society, and this group serves as a social glue for many.
The FSU Fandom Society has been around since 2017 and is student-run, led by President Erik Jacob and Vice President Brooklyn Keller.
“I really like this club,” said Keller. “I’ve been in it for a while; this is where I make all of my friends. This club means a lot to me. There’s a bunch of other clubs, but I think this one is kind of cool because it acts as a ‘catch-all.’”
The Society does not ask students to pick a specific interest. Whether you are interested in tabletop games or a niche podcast, there’s usually someone in the club who is interested in the same thing. Meetings are structured loosely to give a hangout experience followed by rotating programs like watch parties, game nights and even field trips to Renaissance Fairs.
“We want to be seen as a shelter to everyone,” said Jacob. “We try to cater to everyone’s interests in our club to the point where we are called the jack-of-all-trades masters.”
At its heart, the Fandom Society celebrates crafting. From fan art and fanfiction to handmade costumes, the club sees creation as an outlet and a shared language. For many students, joining sparks a creative journey that lasts even after graduation. Whatever shape it takes, the Fandom Society’s core remains the same -- a place where curiosity is encouraged; creativity is practiced, and friendships are formed through shared interests.
