In Memoriam
Dr. Mary Mumper, retired Emeritus faculty member, passed away on January 28.
Mary was a beloved chemistry professor here for 16 years. She also served as chair of the Department of Chemistry, chair of the Faculty Senate and as a member and then director of the FSU Foundation Board of Directors. Mary also received the President's Distinguished Faculty Award prior to her retirement in 2013 and was later made an honorary alumnus of FSU in 2018.
Mary's obituary noted that "she is remembered by students and faculty alike in her goal to help Pre-Med students in particular with the advising she did for the Pre-Professional Medical Society - helping students navigate their way through the medical school application process to get into medical school."
Mary created two endowed scholarships - the Virgil C. and Mildred A. Walters Presidential Merit Scholarship in Chemistry in memory of her parents and the Gene H. Mumper Memorial Scholarship in memory of her husband. Additionally, after her retirement, the Dr. Mary Mumper Service Award was started in her honor.
Dr. Gary Duane Cook, retired Emeritus faculty member, passed away on February 2.
Gary joined what was then Frostburg State College in 1975 as a faculty member in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. He went on to serve for a decade as department chair and, throughout his tenure at FSU, was also the Director of Theatre Publicity.
While at Frostburg, Gary helped design the Performing Arts Center and assisted in the planning and development of FSU's Mass Communication (now Emerging Media) major - an achievement he described as one of his greatest professional achievements. He also established the Gary D. Cook and Janet S. Cook Endowment for Radio WFWM and the Gary D. Cook Professional Development in Theatre Fund.
Gary retired from FSU in 2001 after nearly 26 years of service.
Dr. Charles H. Hircock, coach, mentor and Emeriti faculty member, passed away on February 12.
Dr. Hircock worked in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation from 1971 until his retirement in 2005, dedicating 30 years to Frostburg's track and field program. During his tenure at FSU, he guided numerous student-athletes to national recognition and played a key role in leading the Bobcats to multiple championships.
In honor of his many contributions to Frostburg State, in 2006, Dr. Hircock was inducted as the 144th member of the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame. We are grateful for the impact Dr. Hircock had on countless generations of FSU students.
Retired faculty member Gary Joseph (Fenoglietto) Phillips passed away on February 21.
Gary began his tenure at FSU in 1994 as a lecturer in the Department of Music where he shared his love of music, especially percussion, until his retirement in August 2025. According to those who were close to him, Gary's commitment to his students and colleagues left an enduring mark on all who learned from him.
