FROM THE PRESIDENT

To Frostburg, With Love:

A Message of Gratitude and Confidence in the Next Chapter

Darlene Brannigan Smith, PhD, was appointed interim president of Frostburg State University on March 10, 2025. She will end her term at FSU on June 30, 2026.

Dear Profile Readers,

darlene smith

As my time at Frostburg State University’s interim president begins to wind down, I want to leave Profile readers with a message of gratitude and confidence in FSU’s next chapter. Leading this University has been a profound honor – one I accepted with a deep sense of responsibility that very quickly grew into great pride and heartfelt affection for Bobcat Nation.

When I stepped into this role, I did so with a clear charge: To guide FSU thoughtfully during a period of transition; to support our students, faculty and staff; and to ensure that the University emerged from this year stronger and well-positioned for future success. As this chapter ends, I want to reiterate my deep appreciation for the trust placed in me during this important moment in the University’s history. Thanks to the collective efforts of our campus and surrounding community, I believe we have met that charge.

I have always believed that a university’s strength is not found in any one office or department, but in its people. I have been inspired daily by our students’ perseverance and resilience; by our faculty’s dedication to teaching, research and mentorship; by our staff’s excellence and unwavering commitment to keeping FSU running smoothly; and by our alumni’s loyalty and generosity. Together, you exemplify the values that define Frostburg State University.

We have navigated our share of challenges, but we have also celebrated so many achievements. Under the theme “Together Toward Tomorrow,” we translated meaningful progress into continued action marked by accreditation successes, the conclusion of a record-breaking capital campaign, major renovations to and the grand reopening of the Planetarium, the successful re-launch of the FSU brand and its positive impact on enrollments, new partnerships, expanded programs and a sustained commitment to research and innovation. These accomplishments reflect the resilience, dedication and vision of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners.

Over the past year we continued the important work of advancing our mission to educate, inspire and support one another in ways that will shape a brighter future for the region and beyond while strengthening our financial foundation and identifying operational efficiencies. I am grateful to have served alongside thoughtful leaders and colleagues who care deeply about this University and its future.

To our alumni, I offer my special thanks. Your engagement and advocacy – whether through mentorship, philanthropy or simply staying connected – make a real difference. Even in a year of transition, your belief in FSU’s future echoed loudly, and I hope you feel pride in all that your alma mater continues to accomplish.

As I prepare to return to my previous life before Frostburg, I do so with great confidence that FSU is on the right path forward. Dr. Shadow JQ Robinson brings strong leadership experience, a clear vision for the future and a deep appreciation for the values and sense of community that make Frostburg State so special. I am certain that Bobcat Nation is prepared to embrace what comes next with pride and open arms.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your interim president. I will always be grateful for this year and for the chance I was given to contribute, in my own way, to the success of this great institution. I look forward to continuing to support our Bobcats and to cheering on Frostburg State University with pride, gratitude and deep affection for this remarkable community.

A Bobcat forever,
