Meet Dan Donnelly '86, a Tailgate Trailblazer

When people think about tailgating, they usually picture people grilling food, playing games and enjoying some adult beverages before kickoff. But for proud FSU alum Dan Donnelly '86, it's more than just a fun way to pre-game -- it's his career! Donnelly has transformed the art of tailgating into a thriving business. As the founder of Tailgate Connect®, Donnelly uses his passion for tailgating to connect others like himself at a range of tailgating events across the country. From the FSU campus parking lot to more than 100 stadiums and college and professional games, Donnelly has proven that if you have a purpose, you can turn any passion into a way of life!

Profile had a chance to speak to Donnelly about his experiences connecting people across America via tailgate to share stories about food, drinks, fun and traditions.

What inspired you to start blogging about tailgates and turn it into a business (Tailgate Connect®)?

I've always had a passion for college football and the unique traditions each school has for its teams. In 2004, I set a personal goal to attend a game and tailgate at every Division 1A school, as well as many lower-division games as possible. In 2008, I launched a weekly blog during the college football season called "Dan from The Tailgate," chronicling my experiences. To date, I've attended approximately 300 college football games.

In 2017, while hosting a tailgate at the Rose Bowl for the USC vs. Penn State game, the idea for Tailgate Connect® was born. I noticed numerous hordes of “nomadic” Penn State fans wandering the tailgate area with a case of beer on their shoulders, looking for a place to pre-game. I invited a group of them to join us—and they had an amazing time. They asked if I hosted tailgates regularly. I explained that sometimes I host, sometimes I attend, and sometimes I’m just watching from the trunk of my car, wishing I could join in like they were.  That moment made me realize there was a real opportunity to connect people looking to attend a tailgate with those hosting one. Today, Tailgate Connect® operates in nearly 50 college markets and 25 NFL markets, and we've expanded into other events like concerts and WrestleMania.

What was the tailgating scene like at FSU when you were a student in the 80s?

I played rugby throughout my time at Frostburg and games were always on Saturday, so I only had the chance to attend two football tailgates. Back then, the scene was fairly spartan—mostly people enjoying beverages in the parking lot before and during the game. I’m sure some locals and players’ families had their own gatherings, but I don’t recall a major tailgating presence.

What makes a tailgate truly unforgettable in your opinion?

I get asked this question often, and I always come back to this answer: It's the people and the vibe they create. It’s like walking into a restaurant where everything just feels right—you know it the moment you arrive. Of course, great food, beverages, games, music and TVs playing other games are all key elements. But even with all that, if the vibe is off, the experience can fall flat. So for me, it’s the people that make a tailgate truly unforgettable.

Have you noticed any tailgating traditions that have evolved over the years?

Tailgating games have definitely evolved. About 20 years ago, cornhole started showing up everywhere, and since then an entire cottage industry has developed around a wide variety of tailgate games. The game-day menu and bar setups have also become much more creative—gone are the days of just hot dogs, hamburgers and a cooler of drinks.

What's the most surprising or unique tailgate experience you've covered?

One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was sailgating before a University of Washington game in 2017. We set off from a dock northwest of Seattle on a foggy morning and sailed into “Husky Harbor” a few hours later. We dropped anchor and continued the pre-game celebration in dense fog, where we couldn’t even see the other boats. About an hour before kickoff, the fog lifted to reveal a stunning blue sky—and the magnificent stadium just 100 yards away. I’m still blown away by that entire experience.

What's your go-to tailgate dish or drink?

For morning tailgates, I’m a fan of spicy Bloody Marys. For afternoon games, a cold lager hits the spot. As for food, it’s tough to choose just one dish, but I love smoked protein—pork shoulder, brisket, ribs. Some of the southern schools get incredibly creative with Cajun and BBQ options that are just unbelievable.

You were very involved when you were a student at Frostburg. What are some of your favorite FSU memories?

I took full advantage of the college experience and was active in many organizations and activities. I loved spending time with my friends and fraternity brothers, the themed parties of the 1980s, playing rugby most Saturdays, and being part of the Army ROTC program. Frostburg was a pivotal part of my life. It gave me the foundation and tools for the amazing life I’ve been fortunate to have.

What advice would you give to current FSU students who want to keep the tailgate tradition alive after graduation?

I use tailgate weekends at schools across the country to reconnect with different friend groups from various stages of my life. I’d encourage current students who love tailgating to plan an annual fall trip with your Frostburg friends. Experience different schools’ tailgates, sample new food and drinks and make it a tradition. It’s the perfect way to stay connected and celebrate your shared college memories. In fact, I’ll be back at Frostburg this fall for Homecoming—and I’ll definitely be tailgating before the game that Saturday with old friends!
