Student Tracks Alzheimer's Progress
By Megan Knox '24

FSU student-athlete Julia Ramos
FSU student Júlia Ramos is tackling an Alzheimer’s research project that she’s hoping has long-lasting and life-changing outcomes.
A senior majoring in Mathematics with minors in Biology and Data Science, Ramos is leading a project called Tracking Biomarker Progression in Alzheimer’s Using Machine Learning. Her project focuses on using patient data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative to better understand how specific biomarkers change over time and how they relate to disease progression. With the goal to contribute to earlier and more accurate predictions, it could improve patient care and treatment planning.
Originally from Lloret de Mar, Spain, Ramos came to FSU as an international student athlete on the women’s tennis team. She instantly found the campus to be a place where she knew she could excel on the court and in the classroom.
“Frostburg State has given me the resources, mentorship and flexibility to take on an ambitious project like this as an undergraduate,” she said. “My professors have not only guided me technically but also encouraged me to think critically and creatively about solving real-world problems.”
Balancing academics with competitive athletics is not an easy job, but Ramos thrives on the challenge and Frostburg has been the right setting.
“FSU was the perfect place for me to combine high-level academics with collegiate athletics,” she said. “It allowed me to pursue my passion for tennis while excelling in mathematics and data science.” 🐾
