Forging Futures - and What Comes Next
As this issue of Profile reaches you, Frostburg State University stands at a meaningful inflection point. We are closing one chapter defined by bold ambition and generosity and opening another shaped by new leadership and renewed opportunity. It is a moment to mark with gratitude and confidence.
When Forging Futures: The Campaign for Frostburg State University began in July 2016, it set an ambitious goal: to raise $25 million by December 31, 2023—surpassing the $16.7 million raised in the prior campaign. That goal was achieved ahead of schedule in August 2023. Recognizing the strong momentum across our community, the Foundation Board voted to extend the campaign through December 31, 2025.
That decision proved wise.
The campaign raised $36.7 million, including an additional nearly $12 million during the extension period. More than 17,000 donors have participated. Over half of all gifts have supported scholarships, directly expanding access and opportunity for our students. The campaign has also created 152 new endowed funds and helped grow the Foundation’s endowment from approximately $20 million to more than $50 million.
Faculty, staff, alumni and friends have invested in Frostburg’s long-term vitality as a regional comprehensive university and anchor institution in Western Maryland. That collective commitment deserves recognition. Well-done, Bobcats.
At the same time, we welcome a new era of leadership.
The University System of Maryland Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Shadow JQ Robinson as the next president of Frostburg State University, effective July 1. Dr. Robinson joins Frostburg from the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith, where he serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Raised in Appalachia, he understands the character and potential of institutions like ours. His record of expanding academic programs, supporting first-generation and Pell-eligible students, overseeing major capital projects and advancing fundraising initiatives aligns well with the priorities that will shape FSU’s next chapter.
Dr. Robinson succeeds the late President Ron Nowaczyk, whose steady leadership left a lasting mark on this University. We remain grateful for his service and for the thoughtful leadership of Dr. Darlene Smith during this transition.
This issue of Profile also marks my final message as President of the Frostburg State University Foundation Board of Directors. My term concludes at the end of June. Serving in this role has been a privilege. I have seen firsthand that Frostburg’s strength lies in its people; be it students striving for opportunity, faculty committed to excellence, staff dedicated to service and supporters who give not for recognition, but for impact.
Leadership transitions create space for new ideas and renewed energy. I am confident that under Dr. Robinson’s presidency and with Timi Scaletta Hadra '99 stepping in to lead the Foundation, Frostburg will continue building on the strong foundation established through Forging Futures.
If I may leave you with one final thought - while the campaign has concluded, the work of philanthropy has not. Sustained excellence requires sustained support. The culture of giving that has taken root at Frostburg over the past decade must continue to grow. Fundraising is not episodic; it is ongoing stewardship of the University’s mission.
The forging continues.
Warm regards,
Pat Friel ‘88
