In Memoriam
Retired Professor Emeritus Francis Tam passed away June 21, 2025. Francis began his tenure at Frostburg in 1967 and was a dedicated faculty member in the Department of Physics for 41 years. His teaching interests included meteorology, integrated science and mathematics, teacher education, general physics and quantum mechanics.
Those who knew Francis described him as a quiet, calming presence at FSU who always had a smile for his students and colleagues.
Francis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret, his daughter Dr. Mary Tam, and his sons Dr. Peter Tam and Matthew Tam.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the FSU Foundation Accounts #40116 (Anthony Wai Chiu Tam Science Achievement Award) or #48083 (Tam Student Science Research Award).
Frostburg’s Oldest-Known Graduate Succumbs at 105
Vivian (Fike) Snader ’41, the oldest graduate of record at Frostburg State, passed away in January at 105 years old. Snader, who was residing in Salisbury, Md., was born in Oakland and was the youngest of 10 children. After graduating from Frostburg in 1941, she taught elementary school and worked as a school librarian until her retirement in the early 1970s. Snader enjoyed gardening, playing golf and traveling with her family. She was featured as “FSU’s oldest living graduate” in a 2023 edition of Profile, celebrating the University’s 125th anniversary. Snader was suffering from dementia toward the end of her life. Her daughter, Nancy Rowe, remarked on her mother’s behalf: “She enjoyed her years at Frostburg State Teachers College and knew that she was well prepared for her career as a teacher.”
Captain Clyde William (Bill) Stewart, Jr. M ‘78, retired University police officer, passed away on July 20. While at FSU, Bill also served as Acting Police Chief from 2008-2009 and had 31 years of dedicated service to the University.
Bill was a generous supporter of FSU and our students. He established the Twylah Murphy Stewart Fund (#40141) to assist students from Allegany and Garrett counties who have an interest in elementary education.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Twylah, and their daughters Sarah and Rebecca.
