Clapsaddle Reaches the Pinnacle

In October 2021, Mary Bewig Clapsaddle ’83 was presented the Pinnacle Award from the FSU Foundation, which recognizes those alumni and other friends of the University who have made significant contributions of time, talent or treasure in support of the educational mission of Frostburg State University. Clapsaddle is the 10th recipient of the award, given for the first time since 2015.

Pat Friel ’88, Foundation vice president, introduced Clapsaddle at the FSUF Board Meeting during Homecoming Weekend.

“When the Governance Committee forwarded Mary’s nomination to the Board, her honor was unanimously approved. It’s no wonder, because Mary has given generously of her time, talent and treasure in support of FSU,” Friel said.

Clapsaddle served for 14 years on the FSU Foundation Board. That service included being a member of the Campaign Committee for Staking Our Claim: The Campaign for Frostburg and then serving as vice president and president.

“[Mary] is an extremely enthusiastic supporter of her alma mater and this honor is richly deserved.”

That is just one role in which she has worked tirelessly over the years promoting FSU, most recently as FSU’s director of Government Relations. She and her husband, Chad, are members of the Old Main Society, and they created the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Development Award that has been awarded through the FSU Foundation Opportunity Grant process and are significant contributors to the FSU Foundation Presidential Merit Endowed Scholarship. She has also recently endowed a new merit scholarship and has made a significant contribution to the Challenger Learning Center.

She was previously honored with the Alumni Circle of Excellence Award in 2008 and with the Service to Alma Mater Award and the Alumni Achievement Award in 2015.

“When I first came to FSU in 2015, Mary was the chair of the Foundation Board of Directors and helped ease my transition” said John Short, vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the FSU Foundation. “She is an extremely enthusiastic supporter of her alma mater and this honor is richly deserved.”
