In Memoriam

Jeanne Cordts

Jeanne Moore Cordts, who died Oct. 18, 2022, taught at Frostburg State Teachers College part-time, served as editor of the Journal of the Alleghenies for 14 years, chaired the Frostburg Historic District Commission, was active in the American Association of University Women and served as president of the Frostburg Garden Club. She and her late husband Harold (who chaired the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Frostburg State Teachers College, taught and coached) had received academic scholarships and other financial aid – support essential to advance their education. Prior to her husband’s death in 2004, they funded a scholarship at Frostburg State University – it endures today. Cordts studied at Cazenovia Junior College, SUNY-Albany and Syracuse University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and pursuing a doctorate as well. She was a college student during World War II, then a high school English and history teacher in upstate New York. Cordts initiated the Jeanne Moore Cordts Class of 1942 Academic Excellence Scholarship at Cazenovia College in appreciation of the generosity shown by Cazenovia College’s then president who enabled Cordts to attend college after a hailstorm destroyed the family’s apple crop in 1940. (Cazenovia College also held a dedication ceremony last year for The Jeanne Moore Cordts ’42 Study in Witherill Library.) Establishing these scholarships was a way for Cordts and her husband to show gratitude for those who supported their education. In 2014, Cordts published the book “Windfalls: Stories in the History of the Moore Apple Farm of Upstate New York” that recounts a rare time in history remembered by those from this era.

Phyllis MacVeigh

Phyllis R. Sell MacVeigh, who passed away Oct. 12, 2022, began her service on the Frostburg State University Foundation Board of Directors in 1998 and completed her active duty in 2008, at which time she was granted emerita status. MacVeigh and her husband created the John R. and Phyllis Sell MacVeigh Scholarship at Frostburg State University during their lifetimes, which is designated for students from Allegany or Garrett counties studying business administration. She graduated from Ursuline Business School in 1943, and the University of Maryland’s College of Business and Public Administration in 1947. At Maryland, she majored in finance and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, a significant achievement for a woman in the 1940s. She also did graduate business studies at Frostburg State University in the 1970s. MacVeigh was appointed by former Govs. William Donald Schaffer and Parris Glendenning to the State of Maryland Judicial Nomination Commission, where she served for 12 years. She was a member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association, Alpha Omicron Pi Social Sorority (UMD) and the American Association of University Women. She was also a member of the Frostburg State University Alumni Association, the Junior Women’s Civic Club and the Women’s Civic Club. MacVeigh was a 50-plus-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Cresap Chapter, Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, which became the Western Maryland Health System Auxiliary, and the Cumberland Country Club.

Clifford Walls

Clifford A. Walls, who died Aug. 13, 2022, retired from the Frostburg State University Police Department. He served in the United States Air Force from 1958 until 1961, and for a time was deployed in Pakistan. Walls was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 99 and Farrady Post American Legion No. 24.

Peter Halmos

Dr. Peter B. Halmos, who died Dec. 1, 2022, was a committed financial supporter of arts and education. Particularly close to his heart was the establishment of The Community Trust Foundation’s Peter and Iris Halmos Community Fund, which continues its mission of helping Allegany County and its residents to flourish and prosper. He was also an exemplary community advocate. Over the years in the area, he served as chairman of the Department of Medicine and was president of the Memorial Hospital and Allegany County Medical Societies, as well as volunteered at the Allegany Health Right and the Allegany County Health Department. His was president of the YMCA, the Allegany Arts Council, the Cumberland Theatre, the Community Trust Foundation, the Cumberland Bridge Club and the local chapter of the American Heart Association. He was also treasurer for the Allegany College Foundation, the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts and the WMHS Foundation, as well as served as a board member for many nonprofit organizations, including the Maryland State Arts Council. Halmos survived World War II and the holocaust in Hungary and escaped in 1956. After a short stay in a refugee camp, he traveled to Vienna, London, Edinburgh and finally to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he received a full scholarship to Queens University. He completed his medical and cardiology specialty training with honors in 1965. In 1966, he traveled to the United States with his wife and children to work and teach at West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., and in 1968, accepted an invitation to initiate a cardiology program at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, where he pioneered the development of a cardiac intensive care unit, a high-level care unit, a stress-testing lab, an echocardiogram lab and a monitored exercise program. These were followed by a cardiac catheterization unit and cardiac surgery. He also established The Children’s Diagnostic Center to triage cardiac problems for the area’s youth and was medical director for more than 40 years at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
