Black Body: Baltimore in Black and White

David Manigault '03

David Manigault, a Baltimore-based photographer, has released his coffee-table book on the Baltimore uprisings of 2015 and the everyday life of the city. The book, entitled "Black Body: Baltimore in Black and White," is a powerful visual journey that captures the raw emotions and powerful imagery of the protests that followed the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. Manigault's photographs provide a unique perspective on the events, highlight the perspectives of the community and give voice to those who were affected by the tragedy. His work during the uprisings helped to bring attention to the issues of police brutality and racial injustice, and it continues to be an important historical record of that time. The book also includes a collection of photographs that capture the everyday life in Baltimore, showcasing the city's beauty, diversity and resilience. Manigault's photographs offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who call Baltimore home, capturing their struggles, their hopes and their dreams. "Black Body: Baltimore in Black and White" is not just a book of photographs - it is a powerful visual narrative that tells the story of a city and its people. It's a reminder of the past, but it's also a call to action for a better future.

Billy the Kid: The Life Behind the Legend

George R. Matthews '72

"Billy the Kid: The Life Behind the Legend" is a recent biography that offers a fresh, in-depth look at Henry McCarty (Billy the Kid) by using newly available research to go beyond the myths of the Lincoln County War. The book provides a more complete and humanizing portrait by exploring his early life, including his Irish mother's journey, his education in Indianapolis and his family's moves, presenting him as both an outlaw and a fighter against the corrupt Santa Fe Ring. Published in March 2025, this is Matthews' fifth book.

A reader review on Amazon said, "I just finished this book and I loved it. It has so much new information in it. Out of all the biographies of Billy the Kid and books about the Lincoln County War that I've read, this book is my new favorite. The definitive biography that puts many of the myths to rest and tells what really happened. Great job!"
