Gulden Wins Presidential Teaching Award

Joanie GuldenJoanie M. Herget Gulden ’06 was given the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics and/or computer science teaching.

Gulden is a math teacher at Glen Burnie Park Elementary School, and one of only two teachers in Maryland to win this national award.

“This award symbolizes a team’s commitment to increase our students’ potential,” Gulden said. “It brings focus to the crucial part mathematics plays in education. …This award brings to light that mathematics is applicable to every aspect of life. It also celebrates our students and the successes they have made.”

The award recognizes those teachers who have deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas.
