Garcia Gets “Sprung” in Latest Sitcom
BY TY DEMARTINO ’90
Emmy-award-winning TV creator, producer and writer Greg Garcia ’92 is back with a new sitcom that takes a funny look at the effects of COVID on the prison population. Sprung focuses on three prisoners who are released from lockup early because of the pandemic and return to their small hometown where they try to turn their lives around.
Garcia, who is the mastermind behind such fan favorites as My Name is Earl, Raising Hope and The Guest Book, wrote Sprung when Hollywood shut down during the pandemic. The show stars Garret Dillahunt and Martha Plimpton (both of Raising Hope), with Shakira Barrera, Philip Garcia, James Earl and Claire Gilles. Garcia’s son, actor Camden Garcia, also appears in six episodes.
Shot on location in and around Pittsburgh during the summer and fall of 2021, Sprung is set in the fictitious town of Kimberton, Md. Garcia said it’s a location “inspired by Frostburg,” but he’s keeping a long-standing tradition of naming his sitcom cities after family members. This time it’s his wife, Kimberly Ludke Garcia ’93.
“So far it has been the kids. Earl, Camden County; Raising Hope, Natesville; The Guest Book season one, Mount Trace; then The Guest Book season 2 was my dog, Mabel Beach,” explained Garcia. “I finally named a town after my wife.”
The new show premieres on Amazon Freevee streaming service (formerly IMDbTV) in August.
