What does your job entail?

I am a graphic designer that works on a variety of print and digital materials, creates illustrations and upholds Dickinson College’s brand identity.

Why is this your “dream job”?

This is my dream job because I get to design and illustrate every day—something I'm truly passionate about. All projects come with a unique challenge, allowing me to use my problem-solving skills. From designing holiday cards, stickers and digital advertisements to crafting the homecoming program and a reusable bag for the college store, I take on a wide range of projects that keep my work fresh, exciting and fulfilling.

How did FSU prepare you for your current position?

I was an intern graphic designer in FSU’s Department of Marketing and Communications my junior and senior years of college. This experience went beyond the classroom, giving me the opportunity to collaborate with real clients and create tangible projects for the University. Seeing my designs—whether banners in the hallways, digital ads on lobby screens or program brochures—being used and interacted with by people across campus opened my eyes to the real-world impact of design and the influence my work can have.

Did you have an FSU mentor? If so, who were they and how did they help you?

In FSU’s Department of Marketing and Communications, Joni Smith, Senior Graphic Designer, and Ed Lemire, Director of Creative Services, were my greatest mentors. Their guidance introduced me to the world of higher education marketing and shaped my understanding of this field. Additionally, my FSU art and design professors played a crucial role in pushing my creativity, always challenging me to better my work.

What is a future career goal?

I am working toward becoming a Design Director at a higher education institution, building upon the experiences I’ve gained so far. I’m passionate about the far-reaching impact of higher ed design and eager to see how deeply I can connect with alumni, students and prospective students.

What is a future personal goal?

A future goal of mine is to spend more time exploring nature and the beautiful world around me. Hiking, reading outdoors and listening to the birds is a must!

What advice would you give a recent graduate in pursuing his/her/their “dream job”?

Recent graduates should seize every opportunity to connect with and learn from experienced professionals in their field. Aspiring graphic designers, in particular, should strongly consider doing an internship or freelance work while still in school to gain valuable experience before stepping into the workforce. Keep building that portfolio!
