Alum’s Design Featured on Washington Football Team’s Website

A proposal by Cumberland artist Shannon Benson ’03 was one of 12 concepts featured on the Washington Football Team’s website in its ongoing search for a new name and uniform design.

In July 2020, the team retired its previous name and started to undergo a rebranding campaign. In its efforts, the organization solicited public ideas and received more than 40,000 submissions. A long-time fan of the D.C. team, Benson submitted his concept titled “The Washington Legends,” which features a mysterious cloaked huntsman with a bow and arrow dressed in the traditional team colors of burgundy and gold.

For his submission, Benson wrote, “In our wonderfully wooded Washington, we find our nonracial, gender-neutral hero guarding the parkways and forests. Fortuitously, the positive/negative space on the jersey creates a castle. On the sleeve of the bow arm, we find the number 32 representing all heroes of this organization’s rich history, which has been churning out legends since 1932.”

At press time, the team had not settled on a new name or design. As Benson waits for word, you can  check out all of the featured designs.

Good luck, Shannon!
